A community fun day this Saturday [May 16] will open the new play area behind Circus Street, inviting local people to enjoy outdoor space, with a free barbeque, cakes and ice cream, children’s strawberry planting and a free pop-up bike repair shop.

Organised by Groundwork South, the event and play area development has been funded by Circus Street developers Cathedral Group, Veolia, Puffins Nursery, EDB (Mears) and the Kingswood and Milner Tenants Association.

Said Tommy Tickle, local resident and Chair of the Kingswood & Milner Residents Association, “Everyone in the area is welcome to come along and enjoy the day and we want to thank our neighbours and the many organisations who have helped us raise funds and make it possible to improve our outside space in this area of Brighton.”

Attractions on the day include The Real Junk Food Project, who are supplying cakes and canapes made from ‘intercepted food’, which would otherwise have gone to landfill.

Strawberry plants and herbs and vegetables have been donated by Wyevale Garden Centre and the Groundwork South team will help local children to decorate plant pots, plant them up, as well as inviting people to join in planting up wooden planters, bringing some much needed greenery to the area.

The free barbeque and ice cream is supplied by Sainsbury’s New England store and will be served up by the infamous Tommy Tickle, who is not only Chair of the tenants association, but also a professional clown.

Dr Bike will offer free bike repairs and technical advice via Groundwork’s new Community Bike Shop, Changing Gears, which has just opened on Lewes Rd. This is from the same team who currently running Groundwork’s Bike Hub in the Circus Street space, where abandoned bikes are brought back into use and sold on a donation basis.

Local charity Care Co-Ops will also have a stand at the event for people to find out more and sign up to their free community learning projects.

Event details: 12-4pm, Saturday 16 May 2015, Carlton Row, off Carlton Hill, Brighton, BN2 2QG.
