Springs’ Smokery rebrand wins global design award

RGB_Springs' Smokery Packaging by Distil Studio

Sussex-based artisan smokery Springs’ Smoked Salmon is celebrating an outstanding award win for their new branding in the leading global design awards organised by D&AD, working with branding agency Distil Studio.

With the slogan ‘Just skill, smoke & Sussex oak’ and using charcoal from the smokery’s brick kilns, Distil Studio drew a series of expressive marks and textures born from the very heart of the traditional smoking process used at Springs.

Len Leeson, Director of Springs’ Smoked Salmon, said, “The design is a truly unique idea that brings Springs’ heritage to life both for our in-store packaging and our sales website, reflecting our traditional dry-salting and smoking with logs of Sussex oak to produce the premium smoked salmon of which we are very proud.”

Neil Hedger, Creative Director at Distil Studio, said, “We are delighted to have our work recognised by D&AD, the world’s most prestigious design and advertising awards. As a creative agency, we pride ourselves on full-strength thinking to help our clients challenge their sector. Springs’ Smokery have embraced this and our success is testament to their bravery”.

“The branding was very much a partnership between the design agency Distil Studio and Springs, with intriguing wisps of history and the story of skill, smoke and Sussex Oak from copywriter Peter Dunkley.”

D&AD (design and art direction) is the main organisation for the design and advertising industry, nurturing talent. It recognises the very best of design and advertising globally in its annual international creative awards. Award winners were announced at their festival this week and all winners will feature in their 2016 published annual. The awards ceremony night will be on May 19, when winners will find out what level of award they have achieved.

The team have also just heard that they have been picked as finalists in the International Food and Beverage Excellence Awards for their Springs’ Smokery packaging, design and branding and will find out if they have won at an awards ceremony on May 26.

Notes to editors:

Eighteen months on under new ownership and artisan smokery Springs’ Smoked Salmon has gone from strength to strength, increasing production by 100% in just 15 months and investing in new equipment to supply the growing taste for artisan smoked salmon.

Based at Edburton, West Sussex, the smokery is just ten minutes from Brighton but situated in the rolling hills of the South Downs. For over half a century they have used Sussex oak from the forests around Arundel to delicately smoke salmon, trout, chicken and duck, amongst other fish and meats, using traditional methods.
